Xanax, Dramas & Rock’n’roll is the new album by Italian punk rock four-piece Hearts Apart: twelve songs turning anxiety, frustration, desire, boredom, depression, broken relationships and the everyday absurdities of adult life into something loud, immediate and strangely life-affirming.

It’s a record about feeling stuck, written to make you move.

Punk rock, power pop, garage rock’n’roll and bruised emo instincts crash into each other through sharp guitars, impatient rhythms and choruses made to be shouted back from the floor. Beneath the jokes, cheap beer, lust and exasperation, though, this might also be Hearts Apart at their most vulnerable: songs about losing people, losing your mind, repeating the same mistakes, trying to get back up and occasionally finding someone else spiralling in exactly the same direction.

Sadness against melody. Paralysis against movement. Grown-up damage against the stubborn teenage conviction that three chords and a great chorus might still save the night.

Maybe they won’t.

Play it loud anyway.
